What is Money Smart Week (MSW)?
MSW is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. Hundreds of organizations across the state and Midwest come together once a year to stress the importance of financial literacy, inform consumers where they can get help, and provide free educational seminars and activities throughout the week. Programming is offered to all demographics and income levels and covers all facets of personal finance from establishing a budget to first time homebuying to estate planning.
| The State Treasurer’s Office provides Money Smart Week programming and scholarships for Money Smart Kid essay contest winners each year. |
Here’s what some Money Smart participants had to say:
- Awesome presentation! Instructor was very encouraging, informative, motivational, and entertaining! Loved the class!
- Made economics interesting…excellent presentation!
- Great that this is provided free of charge to the community!
- I learned how to balance my checkbook!

Who is a Money Smart partner?
A Money Smart partner is an organization that actively participates during the Federal Reserve's annual Money Smart Week campaign, with the approval of the Federal Reserve Bank. Organizations are considered partners after providing one or more of the following services during an annual MSW campaign:
- Educational materials, instructors, or a seminar for consumers
- Facilities to host events, sponsor events or promotional materials
- Resources to publicly support or endorse Money Smart Week
How do I get started?
There are no fees to pay or documents to sign to become a Money Smart partner. However, we do require that all workshops, seminars and activities be educational and void of any sales pitches about your products or services. You are welcome to have business cards and/or brochures at the back of the room and refer to them or offer your time to stay after the program and talk with anyone, but not during the scheduled session.
Planning activities for MSW 2011 will start in the fall of 2010. In the meantime, you can complete and submit the two online forms below. Please type the information directly into the forms, save them and email them to Kristen Zueck at kzueck@treasurer.state.il.us.
- Partner Sign up Form: Information from the Partner Sign up Form will be added to our Money Smart partner database, which will include you on the email distribution list for meetings and support materials.
- Proposed Presentation Form: Your proposed presentation topic will be reviewed by the local planning team to ensure it supports the financial education activities and promotional efforts of MSW. (NOTE: This form may not be applicable to you).
What else do I need to know right now?
Once the planning activities for MSW 2011 begin, the Federal Reserve will email you a partner meeting schedule and a 2011 MSW partner kit. Additionally, there will be online tools to help you through the planning process.
