March 15, 2010

Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias gave into March Madness on Sunday, helping the Chicago Steam defeat the Lake Michigan Admirals 116-110 during an American Basketball Association playoff game.

As the celebrity 13th man on the team, Giannoulias warmed up with the players and made a five-minute cameo in the first quarter.

Prior to his public service, Giannoulias played professional basketball in Greece and competed in the NCAA tournament while at Boston University. He’s also counted President Barack Obama and U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan as basketball teammates.

The Steam advances to the Final Eight, taking on the Kentucky Bison on March 17 at South Suburban College. The Steam, at 20-3, is competing for its first ABA title.

The roster includes: Robert Bush of UIC, Maurice Carter of Brandon University, Deron Evans of Indiana State, Stan Gaines of Seton Hall, Mike Henderson of Chicago State, Rico Hill of Illinois State, Sam Mack of the University of Houston, Monte O’Quinn of Northeastern Illinois, Royce Parran of Chicago State, Eric Smith of Campbell University, Steve Strong of Robert Morris, Marcus Vance of Central Michigan, and Karl White of UIC.
