Statement on Hartmarx Purchase from Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias

June 29, 2009

American workers can declare victory today. A bankruptcy judge approved the sale of Hartmarx to a firm that intends to keep thousands of jobs in the United States, including 1,000 here in Illinois. This ruling comes at a time when our state is in desperate need of living wage jobs, with one in 10 people out of work. It also sends a clear message that banks, especially those that receive federal bailout funds, must do the right thing and invest in our nation’s economy and workforce. Union leaders, workers and their elected officials fought to keep this plant open and won. We will continue to stand up against the forces of greed to keep America working.
