Treasurer's team wins charity basketball game
January 30, 2007
Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and his team, the Hometown Gyros, won a four-on-four charity basketball tournament Jan. 27 at the United Center in Chicago.
Giannoulias, a former college basketball player, also showed off his hot hand, beating out 22 challengers in the three-point competition.
The 2007 Half Court Classic was hosted by Multiple Solutions, the junior board and auxiliary group of the Greater Illinois Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The 32-team tournament raised $121,000 to help the 20,000 Illinoisans diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and fund national research, including several projects happening in Illinois.
The event honored Barbara Armstrong, who lives with MS and is the mother of former Chicago Bull B.J. Armstrong. Next year, the tournament will be renamed the Barbara Armstrong Half Court Classic.
Giannoulias played NCAA Division I basketball for Boston University and was a member of the Greek National Team for one year. He was sworn in as State Treasurer on Jan. 8.
