Illinois State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias recently honored three African American business owners in celebration of African American Heritage Month.
Achievement awards were presented to:
Mr. Christopher Gardner, Owner/CEO, Christopher Gardner International Holdings in Chicago, New York and San Francisco (portrayed by Will Smith in the film “The Pursuit of Happyness”). The award was accepted on his behalf by his son, Christopher Gardner, Jr.
Ms. Essie L. Calhoun, Founder/Executive Director, Opal’s House, an emergency shelter for abused women in East St. Louis.
Mr. John M. Clark, Jr., President/CEO, Reggio’s Pizza, headquartered on Chicago’s South Side. Reggio’s is the only African American owned frozen pizza company in the United States.
“These individuals are success stories in the African American community and role models for us all,” Giannoulias said. “They have many traits in common – self-empowerment, perseverance and faith. They also have reached out to the next generation of African American professionals to help them reach their goals.”
Giannoulias promoted the State Treasurer’s economic development programs which back low-interest loans to businesses. He said this access to capital is crucial for African Americans who want to open and grow their own businesses.
"Access to capital is access to power and self-determination; it allows you to take charge of your own destiny," he said.
Giannoulias recognized former Matteson State Rep. Robin Kelly, who he named his chief of staff. Kelly is the first African American woman to serve as chief of staff for a constitutional officer in Illinois.
The celebration was hosted by ABC 7 sportscaster Jim Rose. Entertainment was provided by the Saint John de la Salle Catholic School Academy of Fine Arts choir.
