Families enrolled in the state's college savings plan soon will be able to build their higher education nest eggs by using a credit card.

Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias plans Wednesday to unveil the Bright Start Futuretrust MasterCard, which will send a 1 percent cash rebate on all purchases toward college payments.

"Buying everyday items from diapers to clothes and food to appliances can add up to boost saving opportunities that will defray the rising costs of college," Giannoulias said.

Bright Start, overseen by the treasurer's office, is the state's eight-year-old savings program that allows families to invest money tax-free for college expenses.
